Unofficial Recap: Bighorns vs. Hawks Sept 23

The Helena Bighorns dominated the Sheridan Hawks 8-1 on Saturday night at Whitney Rink. The Bighorns' player highlight was forward Braden Cunningham's hat trick. The Bighorns outshot the Hawks 56-6 in the victory.


Period 1


The Helena Bighorns got off to a fast start in the first period, scoring a goal just over four minutes into the period. The goal was scored by forward Jason Hammett (16), assisted by forwards Joe Feamster (23) and Ty Moore (29).


The Bighorns dominated the rest of the period, outshooting the Hawks 12-1. The Hawks' only shot on goal came late in the period, but Bighorns goaltender Gabe Swanson (30) made a save to keep the period shutout intact.


The Bighorns also had a power play opportunity in the first period, after Sean Harris of the Hawks was penalized for interference at 16:34. However, the Bighorns were unable to capitalize on the power play.


Overall, it was a dominant first period for the Helena Bighorns. They outshot the Sheridan Hawks 12-1 and scored a goal. The Bighorns will look to continue their strong play in the second period and build on their 1-0 lead.


Period 2


The Helena Bighorns dominated the Sheridan Hawks in the second period of their game, scoring four goals and outshooting the Hawks 26-2.


The Bighorns got off to a fast start, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the period. Defenseman Garrett Bogan (5) scored at 1:46, assisted by defensemen Dylan Cunningham (22) and forward Tim Mattingly (26).


Forward Braden Cunningham (19) scored at 2:05, assisted by his twin, forward Camden Cunningham (21).


The Bighorns added to their lead at 4:21, with forward Jack Lambert (17), assisted by forward Ty Moore (29) and defenseman Kelton Chadwick (28). Niko Kempa of the Hawks and Gavin Barr (24) of the Bighorns both got penalties for roughing after a fight at 6:35.


The Bighorns scored their fourth goal of the period at 9:44, with Braden Cunningham (19) scoring his second goal of the game, assisted by forwards Jason Hammett (16) and Jack Lambert (17).


The Hawks had few scoring chances in the period, and the Bighorns' goaltender, Gabe Swanson (30), made the two saves that he faced.


The Bighorns closed out the period with a 5-0 lead and looked to be in control of the game.

Period 3


The Helena Bighorns closed out the Sheridan Hawks with a strong third period performance, scoring three goals and outshooting the Hawks 18-3.


The Bighorns struck early in the period, with forward Ty Moore (29) scoring at 1:42, assisted by forwards Jason Hammett (16) and Jack Lambert (17). Forward Braden Cunningham (19) then completed his hat trick at 2:22, assisted by forward Camden Cunningham (21) and defenseman Gavin Barr (24).


The game got a little chippy at 5:16, with a massive fight breaking out between both teams. Defensemen Mason Eggen (23) and Owen Ramsay (7) of the Bighorns and Keifer Dunham and Tanner Freed of the Hawks all got penalties for roughing.


The Hawks got on the board at 7:14, with forward Daniil Viscu scoring. However, the Bighorns responded with a power-play goal at 15:24, with Tim Mattingly (26) scoring, assisted by forwards Camden Cunningham (21) and Ty Moore (29).

Despite the chippy play, the Bighorns were able to close out the game with a clean 8-1 victory.
